Uses for Aromatherapy: Lemon
When it comes practising aromatherapy, lemon is one of the most often used of the essential oils. It has multiple purposes and is extracted from the lemon fruit. The scent is bright, crisp, sour, uplifting – as if you had cut a lemon in half and held it up to your nose. Studies performed in Japan point towards increased productivity in an office where lemon was diffused into the air. Try burning lemon fragranced candle tarts (preferably soy scented with essential oil) or diffusing essential oil via light bulb rings in your workspace if possible for a boost. You could even carry a few tissues scented with the oil to sniff periodically.
Perfumers already know about the uplifting power of citrus. Not only can lemon help increase productivity, it may even boost feelings of happiness. Try waving the essential oil bottle under your nose when you need a pick-me-up. Clinique Happy is a fragrance that is primarily citrus in its notes, hence the name. Before the days of readily available essential oils homemakers would boil lemon and orange rinds and cinnamon sticks on the stove to scent the home.
Today there are many ways to fill your home with the fragrance of lemon. You will notice that many cleaning products are scented with lemon, however for the safest way to clean look for non-toxic cleansers fragranced with essential oils. You can even make your own all purpose cleanser with a mix of liquid castille soap and water, with a few drops of lemon essential oil added. If you already use white vinegar to clean glass and other areas of the home, lemon oil can help reduce the strong odor.
Need a scrub for a dirty sink or tub? Add a few of lemon oil to baking soda, sprinkle on the area, and let stand for a few minutes. Using a spray bottle, coat the area with white vinegar, then watch as the fizzing action helps you scrub away grime with a lemon scent. There are so many ways to use aromatherapy, lemon happens to be one of the most useful and versatile scents out there. It can also be combined with various other oils if you are one to experiment. However do not apply any essential oil to the skin without first diluting it in a carrier oil such as jojoba, olive, grapeseed or sweet almond.
